Name: Sara Parveen
Age: 6 years
Class: UKG
School: Manthan Seva School
The spark in her eyes, innocence in her speech and an enlightening smile very truly captures the meaning and definition of being a child. Our interaction with Sara, her teachers – Miss Rekha Devi & Sangeeta Bhandari and the principal of the school Mr. Shakeel helped us to discover that Sara is extremely innocent and sensitive girl. Manthan Seva School is paying adequate attention to encourage her to interact more since she is fond of interacting with people & the school is making every attempt to work on this strength of her and nourish it in a way so that it can be harnessed in the years to come. This case study is all about Sara, her life, family, friends and her aspirations.
“My Name is Sara Parveen. I study at Manthan Seva School in UKG and every morning my father drops me from my home which is situated in a nearby area i.e. Middle school, Piska Nagri. I have an elder brother- Fahim Bhai who studies in class ninth and I want to be like him, study as much as possible. My father works in Ranchi as a land broker. I like to coming to Manthan School, wherein we study, play and have a lot of fun. I am fond of singing songs of Hindi Films and stood second in the fancy dress competition. My Teachers Rakhi Teacher and Sangeeta teacher encouraged me to sing the song on the fancy dress competition and everyone applauded me when I sung that song. The song that I sung is stored in my fathers mobile and I listen to it once a day to memorize it.
I share with my parents about all my experiences at school and they laugh with me after listening to it. My favorite subject is English and I try to like the exercise when we associate alphabets with fruits, toys and vegetables. I have also made a special friend in my school and her name is Muskaan.
We study together and play a lot of games. We play a lot of games such as Biscuit race, Frog race, Hen race, Chair race in the school. I have also one more friend at home and she is my cousin sister and her name is Mahvish. But I find it difficult to make her understand about the activities the activities that we do in school. But I can share all these things with Muskaan and we enjoy studying, learning and playing together. I often cry when I have a fight with her but we say sorry, shake hands and become friends again She has helped me in understanding science lessons and I help her with English lessons. Recently, we celebrated Hand washing day in our school wherein firstly we were asked to wash our hands with soaps and then we wiped our hands with a clean cloth. Thereafter, candies were distributed to us and it made us happy.”

TEZ DHAR JI PUKAAR
Background
The implementation of multipurpose project has often raised a lot of eye brows primarily on the grounds of inappropriate way of land acquisition. Forcefully acquiring land from communities and deserting the communities into infertile, hostile terrain has been a common phenomenon. This inhumane and insensitive approach has been adversely affecting the identity of the communities and their folklore (which includes traditional music, regional food, folk medicine, children folklore, traditional sayings, proverbs, rhymes and jingles) are on the verge of extinction.
The story of Dharaji- also popularly known as “ Tez Dhar” has been no different. It is a cluster of villages located in the Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh. The villagers have witnessed trauma and pain on the eve of Bhutia Amavasya – a day of festivity in the region in which thousand of devotes would worship the purity of Narmada Mai on the banks of the Narmada River. On this auspicious day itself thousand of devotes were drowned in the river owing to the sudden discharge of the water from the Indira Sagar Dam without any prior notice.
The incident seemed to have had a significant impact on the community and it is quite possible a number of stories with the community and the river have also drowned with the people. The villages are under submergence and another casualty will essentially mean extinction of the folklore which are an essential towards the identity of the communities.
Volunteering is the powerful tool and its has the power of making the impossible, possible. It has two fold benefits. First is that is allows individuals to push their own boundaries and learn from challenges, experiences in an experiential manner. Secondly it allows the opportunities to benefit the communities. In this very perspective we are initiating Tez Dhar ki Pukaar – Ek Anokhi Koshish. One of the key focus areas of the intervention will be to focus on the traditional methods of the community and make attempts to preserve it in some form through documentation.
Introduction
The project seeks to document the stories associated with the communities of Dharaji and also bring forward some of the stories/ epics associated with the Narmada River. One of the focus areas of the project will be to document the folkore of the region and disseminate it in form of a publication. The dissemination will not be confined to one publication and attempts will be to share the story of Dharaji with other organisation / movements working in the area of Tribal Rights, Land Alienation, Human Rights, etc.
One of the challenges of the project is that it does not have any funding. Thus the volunteers will be required to take care of the following cost
Boarding and lodging expenses during the tenure of the engagement
Traveling expenses (Inward and outward)
Funds for action projects(If required)
Objectives
To document and disseminate
The oral literature of folklore comprising of folk tales, folk epics of the community
The performance oriented folklore of the community comprising of Folk songs, Folk dance etc
To use volunteering as an effective means of implementing action projects in the Dharaji in the thematic areas of Education, Art and Culture, Environment, Health etc
To use volunteering as an means of enhancing the capacities of volunteers as well as the community
Disseminate case studies and stories of the projected affected people with organizations, individuals with the big picture of engaging them with the issue
Methodology
Adoloscent story telling club
The modern education system has laid greater stress on the written text than the oral text. An adoloscent story tellng club will be established to inclulcate the habit of storytelling in the community and the key focus area of the club will be to share stries of the community. The expected benefit of the activity will be twofold. One will be to document the stories shared and the other will be to use story telling as an skill to work on the capacities of the Children in specific skills such as listening, documenting etc.
Key Information Interview
Personal interviews will be undertaken to document the oral literature of the community. Ertain key personnel from the community will be identified and interviewed. The expected outcome will be to document the folk tales stories, folk epics. Lyrics of the folk songs( along with its meaning) of the community and also understanding the interlink ages of the stories with the identity of the community.
Audio – Visual documentation
Subject to the funds available under the project the audio visuals of the performances such as folk songs. Folk dance will be captured
Focussed group discussion:
Focused group discussion is an important tool to understand the perception, attitudes and practices of the population. These methodologies will be used to document the religious and social practices, customs, rituals, and festivals of the community along with its rationales
Communication to the outside world
The information collected will be simultaneously shared with the outside world in form of snail mails, emails. Social networking etc. A core group of organization / people with whom the documentation will be shared and follow up communication will be made in order to identify a possible scope of engaging with the issue.
What is in it for me
The opportunities for volunteering are plenty but there are challenges with which you will be expected to deal with. Firstly you will have to take ownership of your own learning , responsibility of your health and belonging and take care of your own expenses(boarding and lodging, food etc). Secondly the nature of volunteering will be challenging and you will be expected to adapt to the conditions and situations. The opportunities available are as under

My Crazy City
Every time I walk the streets of this crazy city
I feel its lacks honesty and integrity
People throwing plastic bags here and there
Spoiling the city beyond repair
Why I seems to be there favorite quote
Ignorance is exhibited whether its throwing papers in the dustbin or our right to vote
Heading towards our own extinction
On our path to self destruction
I see people lonely in the crowd
I see people thirsty amidst rain and cloud
This city was not meant for instances of annoyance
The credit goes to our own ignorance
We are building so many walls so we are bound to be suffocated
Even the kids of this town are exhausted
The parks are quiet and empty
The streets are noisy and the vehicles are plenty
The creator must be laughing at his own mistake
Does reality exist in the city or is everything fake
Its not long when a breeze in this town will be a miracle
Are we prepared for this debacle
As I think of more rhyming words I see an 8 year old kid putting the plastic bags in a bin
It gives me the hope that all is not lost and we can still win
We can still own the city
We can still appreciate its diversity
A city which will not require the certificate of organizing events to build its visibility
A city which will guarantee its residents participation and equality
I hope the next time I walk the streets of this crazy city
I could see some honesty and Integrity

A difficult word named rehabilitation
A difficult world named rehabilitation,
Is the cause of their disgust and frustration?
Innocent faces looking for support
It is a matter of a house and not a fort (dam)
Things have been blown out of proportion,
Life is at stake of the present and the next generation
The smile on their face is still prevalent,
A few tears here and there are irrelevant
Their life is an everyday fight,
For them every new day brings a ray of light
They have taught me the objective of my survival,
I hope I can contribute to their revival
With this hope I walk towards a village,
Where the authorities are leading carnage
And then a co worker pats on my back and says
Give your best
Leave the rest
All the best

Monoton- not us :)
Volunteering can be at times be tricky. In the orientation camp, attempts are made to open ones mind and clear one of all the stereotypes, that generally hampers our thought process. During the course of the internship, one may be asked to do a task which might be repetitive in nature. There are three basic stages in doing a task. The first stage involves learning the basic skills required to perform a the task. This is generally the time when our focus is at its very best since at the back of our mind we know that an early hiccup could be a major hindrance in successful completion of the task
The next stage arrives commences when we get the essence of the task an our efficiency in doing the task increases. After a while there is a feel good factor comes in as our initial apprehensiveness about doing the task disappears and we are oozing with confidence.
However this stage is short lived and very shortly our intensity recahes a saturation point and monotony and fatigue creeps in. This is the stage when we need to use our creativity to sustain our interest in the task which is at our disposal. It can be listening to music while doing the task , exchanging roles within the purview of the task/activity in case more than one people are involved or we can aslo take a short break and chit chat ith our friend, colleagues, buddies etc.
However at all times it must be ensured that the quality of our work is no affected and trust me its not all that difficult. These innovative methods are extremely helpful and enables us to break the shackles of monotony. Creativity and innovation is the tantra and the Mantra to deal with fatigue, frustration, exhaustion arising out of monotony. Can you think of any method which you used to break the monotony. Please do let me know

I am what I am doesn’t always work
There is a common saying “You are what you think you are”. This applies well when we are referring to convincing and constantly motivating our inner self. However, when it comes to representing yourself to the world and convincing them about your motives, vision, aspirations and action plan it is important to not only think but act in a way which communicates “ what you are “ and “ What do you intend to do” and most importantly “ The means you will use to reach your end”.
The above mentioned facts are quite relevant in regards to our research on Narmada Bachao Andolan. At the Grass root level it is very clear that Narmada Bachao Andolan has diversified is activities and its approach has been multidimensional. However, the interpretation of this Andolan by a person living in a distant place, miles away from the action has always been that it is an Anti Dam revolt which has probably reached its saturation point. But I don’t think it is true.
There have been a few observations which has helped me in identifying the cause and affect of such a situation
Misrepresentation
The misrepresentation of facts by the Media (both print and electronic) has formed an impression in the minds of the people and Narmada Bachao Andolan is facing it difficult to break the cobweb of stereotypes surrounding them
I used to be conceited but now I am perfect
This attitude can be one of the biggest factors of holding ones progress. NBA no doubt has been a revolution of its kind and has discovered a way to keep to the momentum going against all odds. However it has often taken all the responsibilities in their own shoulders and its ideologies and vision has not quite disseminated among the masses.
Let’s take each day at a time
Everyday there is something new that NBA deals with and NBA cannot be blamed for that, it is just the nature of the movement. However concentrating and confining its thinking to today have often questioned its vision. Every revolt requires a clear objective and a powerful vision. Unfortunately for NBA that vision is lacking today. The best way to overcome this problem is to make NBA visible because people seem to have ignored it for some time now and we all are responsible for it (Including me)
Quality and not quantity
Today NBA Requires people who possess diverse skills and work in a way that can contribute (in a big or small way) to the organization. It might involve a minor thing like getting an important document Photostatted, preparing a database in which everyone who has been associated with NBA is named or arranging the communications that NBA has received from NHDC OR NVDA. However the bottom line is that the work should be done within reasonable timescales, avoiding duplication of work and most importantly prioritizing work.
Creating new ways
The fight has been long and just like a metal which has been kept in the sun for years, exposed to rain, sun catches rust. Similarly the people who have been involved in this struggle have lost their enthusiasm to an extent and hence there is greater need to involving volunteers- national and foreign, initiating brainstorming sessions and finding new ways and methodologies. The volunteers can bring a fresh approach to this movement and can provide valuable inputs such as – the kind of rehabilitation practices that is done in foreign countries and the kind of strategies used. The Volunteers can also assist the movement in their minor projects in terms of experience and skill through well defined volunteering Programmes. We can definitely resort to creative mediums such as Blogging, street plays, Citizen Journalism, undertake small surveys and approach environmentalist, policy makers across India to comment on the findings and get these surveys propagated. Last but not the least International Organizations need to be approached such as united nations and the Humanitarian issues which are at stake need to be questioned.

Bose da - Bande mein hai Dum
An amazing cook, Host and Manager. He is a one man catering company. They call the name " Bose da " and he is ready with two plates of Rice, Subjee, Dal and Achar. At least 50- 60 people have three meals a day at his place and he manages all by himself. My college Mr Rajesh suggested, Bose Da is confined to his kitchen and Room and the only reason he moves out is to buy some vegetables, basic ingredients for the food he is preparing.
Initially I was hesitant to be shy to ask for more rice and Dal and Bose Da took a mere 2 days to observe the fact. Now the moment I want to have more of Dal and Roti Bose Da comes up to me and serves it to me, without even been asking. Its truly amazing and inspiring to watch and observe him every day.
The precision with which he works is truly commendable. The best part about him is that inspite of him been involved in so many things, He doesn't seem to complain. It seems for him each work is a process that needs to be done and it is of no use to complain and crib about it. He has been doing the same work for years but the energy which he possess defies all logic in favor of Monotony.
and that's not all. One can often discover the kid in him, especially when he is playing with his daughter and Son.But that is just for a moment and he moves on ......
I guess every bit of his labor and sweat says " This is for them !"
